the work. the apples and oranges. the Reality. the freedom – zakiyyah sablay

The day after Eid, one of our teachers spoke to us about how critical the week ahead was. critical in the sense that during Ramadaan, we may have been properly focused on trying to become closer to Him and post-Eid, this needs to remain our focus so we don’t lose anything we may have gained in the month.  and if this was not our focus, then we need to keep striving. Moulana said to us :

Allah is Real.  ( the fact )

How Real is He in your universe? ( the question )

and trying to make Him real in our universes, in our lives – that doesn’t stop.

basically :  the work is not done until we leave this world. until this life is done

but how do we go about this work ?

along with constantly being on guard with our heart and what we allow inside it, with our nafs and what it’s screaming for and giving ourselves time alone with Allah,  i believe we simply have to be in the business of finding Him in The Seemingly Ordinary. in things like apples and oranges. the warm water running from our taps. in the crying when something hurts.  in that feeling after the cry. cheese sandwiches. being able to make a cheese sandwich a toasted cheese one. the sound of our name being said by someone we feel safe with. having socks to cover our feet during the cold weather. in the amount of security simply holding a hand can give. a baby’s smile. the sound of family laughing together. in the cup of chicken & corn soup on a chilly day. in the glass of cold water on a hot one. the ability to feel. to feel love : knowing that there is at least one person in each of our lives whom we know, without a doubt, that we are loved by. knowing that there is at least one person in each of our lives whom we know, without a doubt, that we love. in that feeling of getting into a bed after a long day

because perhaps this is how The Seemingly Ordinary will become The Extra-Ordinary for us

and perhaps this is how His Realness will become clearer than anything else in our universes

and in sha Allah Ameen when He becomes our Only Reality, everything else will appear in its true light and we will truly be set free. and this Deen is liberation. the Kalimah Tawhid ( la ilaha illAllah Muhammadur-Rasulullah / there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah ( and ) Muhammad SAW is His Messenger )  is literally the most liberating statement any human being can ever utter.  in it, we are saying “no, there is nothing in my life that i submit to except Allah”, we are saying no to every and any created thing that may creep into our heart and want to take His place, we are saying no to all of our own desires that we may be tempted to put in front of what He wants from us. we are saying no to anything other than Him being our goal.

and we are saying that Muhammad SAW was sent, by Him, to teach us that ‘la ilaha illAllah’.  this means that he SAW is our example. and Allah was most definitely the Most Real in his blessed life, SAW. He SAW made ordinary things and ordinary moments Beautiful things and Beautiful Moments. so we need to be trying to do the same.

this was him SAW :

the Messenger of Allah SAW would carry Al-Hasan and al-Husayn on his back while crawling around on his hands and feet. He would say to them, “What an excellent camel you have! What excellent riders you are!” He would perhaps have them take turns. On one occasion, as the Messenger of Allah SAW was prostrating ( in prayer), al-Hasan entered and climbed onto his back. The Messenger of Allah SAW lengthened his prostration until Al-Hasan climbed down. When he finished ( the prayer) some of his Companions said, “O Messenger of Allah ! You lengthened your prostration.” He said, “My son made me his mount and I disliked to rush him” ( as found on page 164 of ‘Muhammad His Character and Beauty by Shayk Yusuf Nabahani translated by Abdul Aziz Suraqah )

Allah has given us SO much to find Him. and His Beauty and His Love is truly spilling from every single seemingly ordinary thing in our lives.

i end with a favourite quote :

“And did you feel it, in your heart, how it pertained to everything ? And have you finally figured out what beauty is for ? And have you changed your life?”

may we feel it, in our hearts, how it pertains to everything. and may we finally figure out what beauty is for. and may it change our lives. may we taste the freedom that comes with realising that He is Rab and we are simply slaves of His. ameen
